Billboard.africa is pleased to bring our very own Nigerian reggae/dancehall singer/songwriter Patoranking was born Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie in Ijegun-Egba in 1990. Growing up deeply immersed in the music of Buju Banton, Lucky Dube, Tuface, Fela Kuti, and other greats of reggae, dancehall, and Afro-beat, Okorie channeled these influences into his own unique style and began releasing original music in 2012, also drawing on the influences of Nigerian fuji music for his earliest singles. The singer hails from Ebonyi State. He was born in Ijegun-Egba Satellite Town. Later he moved to Ebute Metta in Lagos. Patoranking was a student of Citizen Comprehensive College Epe and Jibril Martin Memorial Grammar School in Iponri.
Patoranking started out as a dancer to a ghetto dance called ‘galala’. He danced at carnivals and to street jams. He got his stage name Patoranking from a Jamaican friend he met at Alpha Beach, Lagos. While the Jamaican was playing his guitar, Patoranking was singing to the medley. So, the Jamaican decided to give him a name befitting his talent since ‘ranking’ in Jamaica means highly respected.
Talking about the musical career of Patoranking, he released his first single in 2009 with Dem Mama record label. From 2005 to when he released his first single in 2009, he was collaborating with other artists. Patoranking’s inspiration come from God and his experience from the ghetto life. Although, he has also been influenced by the music style of some notable musicians like Buju Banton, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, Lucky Dube, Chaka Demus, Majek Fashek, Blackky, Blackface, Tuface and Marvelous Benjy.
Nigerian Dance Hall veteran, Patoranking has released a new mid-tempo record titled “Abule“, has he continues to gears up his upcoming project. Patoranking’s new song ‘Abule‘ a pure descriptive street anthem off his eagerly awaited project, ‘Three” album scheduled to be released in few days. Recollect, Patoranking accumulated massive numbers of streams from his previous work, ‘Wilmer‘ album. With production credit from Telz.
The single is a celebration of his Lagos neighborhood, Ebute Metta, and of hoods worldwide — premiered today on Beats1 with Ebro, and is out now on all DSPs. The release of ‘Abule’ will be supported by several digital initiatives, and a music video dropping Aug. 5, all with the theme of representing and protecting your hood.
